How to Play Roulette Online: Bet Types, Payouts and Variants

Roulette is one of the most recognisable casino games: a small ball, a spinning wheel, and dozens of betting options. Yet roulette is often misunderstood — players either bet by “feeling” or follow systems that do not hold up mathematically. Let us break down how the game works, how European and American variants differ, and why that matters for every bet you place.

European vs American Roulette: One Number Changes Everything

The key difference is the number of pockets:

Parameter European American
Pockets 0-36 (37 pockets) 0, 00, 1-36 (38 pockets)
House Edge 2.7% 5.26%
Straight-Up Payout 35:1 35:1
RTP 97.3% 94.74%

A single extra 00 pocket in the American version nearly doubles the house edge. With identical payouts: over 100 rounds of $100 bets, expected losses in European roulette are $270; in American — $526. Choosing the variant is the first practical decision before you play.

French Roulette uses the European wheel with two additional rules: La Partage (when 0 lands, half the stake is returned on Even-Money bets — Even/Odd, Red/Black, High/Low) and En Prison (the bet is locked for the next spin). These rules reduce the house edge to 1.35% on even-money bets.

Wheel Sectors and Numbers

The number layout on the wheel is not random — it is engineered for balanced distribution of odds. On the European wheel numbers do not run in sequence: 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25, 17, 34, 6, 27, 13, 36, 11, 30, 8, 23, 10, 5, 24, 16, 33, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9, 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26.

Red numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 23, 25, 27, 30, 32, 34, 36. Black: the remaining 1-36. Green: only 0 (plus 00 in American).

Bet Types and Payouts

Bets fall into two categories:

Inside Bets — placed directly on numbers:

Bet Coverage Payout Chance (European)
Straight Up 1 number 35:1 2.7%
Split 2 adjacent numbers 17:1 5.4%
Street 3 numbers in a row 11:1 8.1%
Corner 4 numbers 8:1 10.8%
Line 6 numbers (2 rows) 5:1 16.2%

Outside Bets — placed on groups of numbers:

Bet Coverage Payout Chance (European)
Red/Black 18 numbers 1:1 48.65%
Even/Odd 18 numbers 1:1 48.65%
High/Low (1-18 / 19-36) 18 numbers 1:1 48.65%
Dozen (1-12, 13-24, 25-36) 12 numbers 2:1 32.43%
Column 12 numbers 2:1 32.43%

Note: the chance on Red/Black is not 50% but 48.65% — because of the zero pocket. That is the house edge at work.

Call Bets (Announced Bets)

In European and French roulette you can place call bets — wagers based on sections of the wheel rather than the table layout:

  • Voisins du Zero (“neighbours of zero”) — covers 17 numbers around 0 on the wheel (0, 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 28, 29, 32, 35). Requires 9 chips.
  • Orphelins (“orphans”) — 8 numbers not covered by the other two zones. Requires 5 chips.
  • Tiers du Cylindre (“third of the wheel”) — 12 numbers opposite zero. Requires 6 chips.
  • Neighbours — a selected number plus N neighbours on each side of the wheel.

Call bets are available in most live roulette variants and some RNG versions.

Betting Systems: What Works and What Does Not

No betting system changes the math of roulette — the house edge is fixed at 2.7% (EU) on every spin. Systems only affect variance:

  • Martingale — double the bet after each loss. Theoretically recovers losses, but requires an unlimited bankroll. In practice, table limits stop a streak after 7-10 doublings (64x-256x the initial stake). Ten consecutive reds does not mean the 11th will be black — every spin is independent.
  • D’Alembert — increase by one unit after a loss, decrease by one after a win. Less aggressive than Martingale, same math.
  • Fibonacci — bets follow the sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13…). Slow stake growth, limited damage in short losing runs.
  • Flat Betting — same stake every round. Maximises session length. The only “strategy” that does not accelerate losses.

Practical takeaway: to play longer — flat betting on outside bets in European roulette. For high payouts — straight bets with a defined bankroll limit.

Online Roulette Variants

Online casinos offer several formats:

  • RNG Roulette — algorithm determines the outcome. Plays in demo without registration. Fast rounds, no waiting for other players to bet.
  • Live Roulette — real dealer, physical wheel, video stream. Evolution Gaming: Lightning Roulette (random multipliers 50x-500x on straight numbers), Immersive Roulette (slow-motion ball tracking), Speed Roulette (round ~25 sec). Pragmatic Play: multiple table limit variants.
  • Auto Roulette — automated wheel without a dealer, rounds every 20-30 seconds.
  • Dual Ball Roulette — two balls per spin. Payouts adjusted accordingly.
